Selecting the 10, 20 or 100 best anime shows is next to impossible. There is an endless number of awesome anime series and movies that are interesting and addictive in their own ways, which makes this a really tough mission.

What makes is even harder is the fact that I'm a huge fan of anime, and I could go on describing my favorites for days, but since I decided to talk about the best anime shows that you should watch in 2018, that's exactly what I'll attempt to do. On this list you'll find brand new anime series that came out this year, as well as some that released a new season and are particularly popular right now.

You'll also find a selection of my favorite anime movies towards the end, so stick around and I promise you won't get disappointed.

1. A Place Further than the Universe (Sora yori mo Tooi Basho)

A Place Further than the Universe is a really emotional and sentimental anime with very likeable characters, and amazing animation with a lot of attention to details and adorable character designs.

The dialogue in this funny and cute slice of life is heartwarming and inspiring and the story is quite unique and entertaining.

One of the main characters, Mari Tamaki is a high school student that's always been intrigued with the world around her and ends up meeting Shirase Kobuchizawa who has been preparing to go on a big journey to follow up on her childhood dream with a personal mission in mind. She wishes to go to the one place where her mother was last seen, and that place happens to be Antarctica.

Despite the fact that Mari has always had large aspirations in life, like many of us, she's always feared the unknown and felt unsure of her capabilities. That however is not going to stop her now. That lingering fear will go away once she meets Shirase - a girl with grand dreams of her own and determination to succeed.

Hinata Miyake and Yuzuki Shiraishi also join the two girls on their expedition and the four of them head towards the Antarctic.

2. My Hero Academia 3 (Boku no Hero Academia)

After a great first season, and an amazing second one, My Hero Academia delivers new episodes filled with action, unique animation, emotional and funny scenes and much more. The series is filled with excellent fight scenes, awesome characters and a great soundtrack. It's not that it's the best anime ever, but it does attract a lot of people from all over the world since it's a very delightful and trilling anime that you're probably going to love as well.

Izuku Midoriya lives in a world where having superpowers known as "Quirks" (Kosei) are the norm. Despite not having a Quirk of his own, and being constantly bullied by his classmates he still dreams of becoming a Hero one day.

After being the only one who tries to save a childhood bully of his from a villain, the world's greatest Hero, All Might, gives him a quirk of his own, known as One for All.

The story of the series revolves around Izuku's entrance into U.A. High School, a high school that prepares the next great superheroes of the generation, and follows him through all the triumphs, disappointments and challenges that await him as he tries to take full control of his quirk.

My Hero Academia features one of the best anime fights ever that shows Izuku's weaknesses and his ability to rise above his fear and finally be able to control his quirk to the fullest.

3. Tokyo Ghoul:re (Tokyo Guru)

Tokyo Ghoul:re is guaranteed to give you goosebumps. The story is really impressive and interesting to follow, although a bit complicated at times. The series has one of the best anime openings, showing some awesome environmental design and camera pans which perfectly exhibit the moody and dark atmosphere that Tokyo Ghoul is known for.

This feeling and intense atmosphere carry on throughout the season, followed by tons of emotional rollercoasters and awesome scenes that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

If you're not already familiar with this famous dark and twisted manga or haven't seen the anime yet, here's what you need to know.

Tokyo Ghoul:re is a sequel to Tokyo Ghoul, a famous fantasy anime series. Although the atmosphere in Tokyo has changed drastically, ghouls are still a big problem and a huge threat to CCG's existence.

tokyo Ghoulre

A special team, by the name of Quinx Squad, is created in order to give the CCG a hand in exterminating Tokyo's unwanted residents and destroy these dangerous creatures once and for all.

So far Tokyo Ghoul:re is following the manga quite closely, which is amazing, since in this sequel you will get to see the most intriguing parts of Tokyo Ghoul.

Some of the best anime quotes that have left a mark in all of us are featured in Tokyo Ghoul. Let's have a look at two of my favorite:

Why is it that the beautiful things are entwined more deeply with death than with life?
Kaneki Ken

Whose fault is it that things ended up like this? Coincidence? An accident? Fate? There's no such thing as fate. It's simply a combination of one circumstance and the next. And who is it that creates those circumstances? Who is it? It's you.
Rize Kamishiro

The series is full of dark and awesome fights that will blow your mind. You can check out some of them here.

The series also explores Touka Kirishima and Ken Kaneki's romantic relationship, and their undying love and commitment to each other. Although they are a very cute couple, I have to also mention a few other couples which I believe to be the best anime couples of all time. The list includes:

  • Erza Scarlet & Jellal Fernandes from Fairy Tail
  • Hinata & Naruto from Naruto and
  • Winry & Edward from Fullmetal Alchemist

4. High School DxD 4th Season (Haisukuru Di Di)

School DxD is a really popular anime from the harem genre that first aired back in 2012, and is in its 4th season right now. The last season ended with a really interesting fight and people couldn't wait for the next season to come. The anime follows a high school student called Issei Hyodo, who is a basic pervert that peeps on women, and wishes to one day have a harem of his own.

His life gets an unexpected twist one day as he goes on a date with a girl who turns out to be a fallen angel that ends up murdering him.

However, his story is nowhere near the end, as a beautiful devil revives him and recruits him as a servant.

He slowly starts to adjust to his life in the violent and scary world of angels and demons, while doing his best to hide his new life from his friends and family.

5. One Piece (Wan Pisu)

Do not let the number of episodes or uniquely odd art styles deter you from watching this amazing pinnacle of all anime.

The series soundtrack is one of the best anime soundtracks and is simply unforgettable.

You can rest assured that you won't ever encounter a dull moment while watching One Piece. You will be pleasantly surprised, sometimes shocked, but most importantly made to laugh until you cry. Just when you think you've got something figured out, you get surprised by the unexpected and epic twist that happens.

One Piece is a constant adventure with an amazing array of characters all of which have their own uniquely awesome stories to tell.

For those of you who are not yet familiar with the story, here are the highlights:

one piece wan pisu

Years ago, a pirate king that went by the name of Gold Roger was executed. He left tons of treasure behind, along with the famous "One Piece".

The one who finds the "One Piece" will become the new pirate king.

Monkey D. Luffy is a young man who is determined to follow his childhood idol's footsteps and retrieve the One Piece.

He sets off on his journey, along with a group of skilled thieves and fighters that help him along the way. They set out on their new adventures and what happens in the meantime is guaranteed to leave you in tears of joy and anger - at times.

According to me, One Piece is the best anime of all time, and I highly recommend it to you!

Here are a few of its most famous quotes:

Power isn't determined by your size, but the size of your heart and dreams!
Monkey D. Luffy

Hero? No we're Pirates. I love Heroes but I don't want to be one! Do you know what heroes are? Say there is a chunk of meat, Pirates will have a banquet and eat it but heroes will share it with other people.
Monkey D. Luffy

6. Violet Evergarden (Vaioretto Evagaden)

The story revolves around Violet Evergarden and how she reintegrates herself back into society, after the Great War is finally over. After four years of conflict, and after being used solely as a weapon, she needs to start searching for her purpose and get her life back together.

In order to do that she needs to find a job. She takes a job as a letter writer, and starts to focus on uncovering her past by searching for a meaning in people's words and the emotional things they write about in the letters.

You will be positively surprised by how this character that's seen only war and suffering is portrayed, which was done splendidly in my opinion. It's a wonderful thing seeing how she starts tackling new emotions and feelings that were not known to her before and how she deals with them is guaranteed to give you goosebumps.

If I had to pick the best anime on Netflix for 2018, I'd have to choose Violet Evergarden.

It has one of the best anime soundtracks:

But let's not forget Ergo Proxy opening or Lilium - the opening theme for Elfen Lied, which is one of the best anime songs if you ask me.

Best Anime Movies of All Time

Now that we've had the chance to discuss a lot of my favorite anime series for 2018 it's time to have a look at the best anime movies that you must watch this year as well!

The list is not only filled with my personal favorites, but with world famous movies that have left a true mark on me and every other person who's watched them.

1. Your Name (2016) - Kimi no Na wa

The amazingly endearing combination of body-swap, time-travel, and random disasters made this movie a big hit in Japan and all around the globe. It's the imagination of Makoto Shinkai that brings all of these events alive, and gives birth to an unconventional romance that will leave you in tears.

your name kimi no na wa

This movie is nowhere near your typical romance movie. It introduces a love story between two teens whose lives suddenly change, as they start switching places and bodies, without even realizing it at first. What at first seemed to be a dream was soon discovered to be their unbelievable faith that will make them experience love, empathy and curiosity on a whole new level.

2. Spirited Away (2001) - Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi

Spirited Away might just be the best and finest anime movie of all time. A lot of the scenes are done using frame-by-frame drawing, as Miyazaki actually began his career in anime using that style. He personally draws more than a thousand frames his self, leaving only some of the busywork to the computers.

The movie is focused on ten-year-old Chihiro's story and what she experiences along her journey to an unknown and magical land. She and her parents were moving to her new home when they took a wrong turn and somehow wound up in an unknown world that they choose to explore.

Her parents go to eat at a restaurant while she speaks to a boy named Haku, at a bathhouse that she visits.

He warns her to go back, but after she sees her parents turned into pigs, she has no choice but to find a way to convince Yubaba, the witch responsible for the curse, to give her back her mom and dad so they can all go home. Meanwhile, she's trapped in this world and needs to lay low and stay undercover while she looks for a way to free her parents.

3. Ghost In The Shell (1995) - Koukaku Kidoutai

In 2029, using the advancements in cybernetic technology, you can augment or completely replace the human body with cybernetic parts. One more thing that's now also possible is to have a cyberbrain. That's having a mechanical casing that goes on the brain and provides access to the Internet and other networks.

That's when the Puppetmaster steps in. He is a hacker who uses his skills to hack into people's brains and use them for his own needs. Kusanagi's police team is called to investigate the case, but they seem to constantly run into dead ends, which is why she'll have to use all of her strengths to find the Ghost in the Shell and uncover his identity.

4. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006) - Toki o Kakeru Shojo

The Girl Who Leapt through Time is much more intimate than most science-fiction anime movies out there.

The movie focuses on time travel and the coming of age.

Unlike most time travel movies, the main character doesn't want to use her abilities to change the course of history but simply tries to alter the small things and little moments between her and her two best friends.

the girl who leapt through time

However small and insignificant her acts might seem to us and her, they can all lead to disastrous consequences and can rarely lead to any good. Unfortunately, Makoto has to learn about these consequences the hard way.

She initially uses her powers to simply jump to the past and make small changes that make her life easier, but soon enough she has to face the consequences that her changes can bring about, as her life suddenly takes an unexpected turn.
