It's the New Year, and we all want to get a head start on shedding any extra inches we've gained around the middle over the festive period, and leap forward with our New Year resolutions.

It might seem obvious, but if you are feeling tired, it could be your body trying to tell you it needs to rest more. It's so easy to forget to actually listen to what our bodies might be telling us, and instead focus on what we think we should be doing.

With a new year to embrace, many of us are feeling pressured to fit too much into our lives at the moment. That can mean earlier morning starts and later bedtimes.

If you are waking up tired or feeling fatigued in the middle of the day or in the early evenings, take a look at how long you are actually sleeping, and what the quality of your sleep is like.

If you're not convinced that your lack of energy is due to a lack of sleep, check out this list of tell tale signs:

  • You feel lethargic or tired
  • You feel grumpy or irritable
  • You are experiencing weight gain
  • You crave junk food or caffeine
  • You feel in a low or depressed mood

The recommended sleep time for an adult is around 7 hours, but some people need more and others need less. But don't forget that it is more important that the quality of any sleep you do get is high otherwise, what's the point?

  • Wind down before bedtime with relaxing activities such as taking a bath or reading a book.
  • Avoid using phones and other screens close to bedtime.
  • Try meditation, mindfulness or writing in a journal before bedtime, to help quieten your busy mind and remove any thoughts or worries that may stop you from falling asleep.

Be More Active

It might sound like a bit of a contradiction to say - "move more" to someone who feels like they need an energy boost. The truth is that moving your body can actually generate more energy so that you find you want to move even more.

When you incorporate regular exercise into your daily life, you will find that more energy is a result of it. It doesn't have to be anything overly-taxing either.

A study has shown that people who are more sedentary and who suffer from a persistent and unexplained fatigue can actually improve their tiredness by 65% when participating in low intensity cycling on a regular basis.

So the next time you feel drained for no apparent reason, instead of picking up a snack or caffeine boost, try going for a ten minute walk instead and se how you feel. A short walk can be a serious pick-me-up, and instead of consuming calories, you will have burnt some!

There are loads of different ways that you can incorporate more exercise into your life if you are the kind of person who tens not to move any more than you need to. And picking up some of these good habits can make a real difference to your health, happiness and energy levels.

Check out this list of ideas:

  • Avoid taking the bus or driving when you can easily walk the distance. Or consider taking transport for only a portion of your journey, and walking the rest. You will feel better for it, and enjoy your day a whole lot more as you will feel more alert, and happy about the fact that you burned some extra calories as a bonus.
  • Don't spend your lunch breaks at work, and especially don't eat at your desk. Make the effort to go for a walk and have your lunch on a park bench if the weather isn't too wet and miserable. Don't be put off by the cold or wind either. Just wrap yourself up and go for it, because you will come back to work feeling refreshed and alert!
  • Always take the stairs. Never take the lift or escalators. Seriously, just make it your golden rule, and the reward will be a nice little energy boost to wake you up out of your gloom.

Forget about all of these fad diets and exercise plans. They only make you focus even more on what you consider to be your flaws, they give you cravings for all the food you really want to be eating, and if you give in and break your diet, well then you just feel like an awful failure.

Sugar zaps your energy. Well, it boosts it initially, but then you have to deal with the come down, and that makes you crave even more sugary food, it's a nasty cycle of doom. Don't give in to it! Just cut sugar out.
